Troubleshooting

Some issues you may encounter, possible solutions, and their current status.

Firefox is an amazing browser. iNetWord relies heavily on the Design Mode support of the browser it runs in. At this point in time Firefox does not support some of the Design Mode functions that iNetWord utilizes. We anticipate future releases of Firefox and improvements to iNetWord will enable many of the features listed here.

No Update Styles Button

Firefox supports changing paragraph styles while editing, but does not reflect those changes in the HTML generated with documentElement.innerHTML (the function used to generate the HTML of a document). Since you'd expect your new styles to be saved with your document, we removed the Update Styles button from the Firefox edition of iNetWord.

You can still use the user-designed paragraph styles in Firefox that were present in the document when you opened it. Therefore you can design documents in Internet Explorer, save them as templates, and utilize the styles in Firefox.

No Undo Button

Because iNetWord performs more editing manipulations than the core browsers support (font sizes, margins, bullet types, borders, etc.), iNetWord has its own Undo module. Other online editors rely on the browser's built in Undo module. iNetWord's Undo module utilizes the node.uniqueID property which is not supported by Firefox. We are evaluating other ways to implement Undo in Firefox but don't anticipate an immediate fix.

Cursor Does Not Show In Dialog Boxes

This is related to Mozilla bug 287813 which has been fixed in the current Gecko 1.9 development tree. This fix is to be released to the public in Firefox version 3 in 2007.

President's Note

We recognize the importance of Firefox. It plays a valuable, and often leading, role in the industry. We considered delaying the release of iNetWord Version 2 until all these issues were resolved. We decided, however, that the advanced features available in both our Firefox and Internet Explorer editions were worth releasing in Beta now. We wish to gather feedback from a broad spectrum of users. Your feedback will guide the improvements we make to iNetWord so that the final release version will meet all of your needs.

FTP

FTP or File Transfer Protocol enables you to upload (copy) files from your computer's hard drive to the iNetWord host server.  Using FTP you can also delete files, rename files, and create, rename, and delete folders.  (Note that FTP protocol does not support transferring files between two server directories.)  The simple FTP utility built into Internet Explorer supports these functions.  The FTP utility built into Firefox v. 1.5.0 does not yet allow deleting or renaming files or folders.

One solution is a free FTP client for Firefox called FireFTP, created by Mime Čuvalo.  It is more sophisticated than IE's FTP utility, and as of September 2006 it is in version 0.9 beta.  As practiced by iNetWord and Firefox, FireFTP bugs are publicly submitted and viewable online.  For most FTP tasks, however, FireFTP works well.  You can download FireFTP for Firefox here.

Spyware is malicious code that connects itself to your browser. Spyware often attempts to insert its code, fake advertisements, or other unapproved content into the Web pages you view.

If you have spyware on your computer, it can show up in iNetWord in many ways. You may see text on the page when you open a blank document. You may see boxes, pictures, or words that move around for no apparent reason. Your computer may operate slower than it did before. You may have noticed similar symptoms at other Web sites.

To maintain the health and security of your computer, we recommend you use one of the spyware and virus protection packages available from McAfee, Symantec, Microsoft, or the others.

When I resize a picture, why is the clarity reduced?

iNetWord's grab handle resize feature is designed for quick sizing clear gif's, for sizing of pictures where higher quality isn't a consideration, and for quick layout blocking.  At this time It isn't designed with the computing intensive methods that your favorite picture editing program has.   So use picture editing programs to resize your pictures before importing them into iNetWord for final use.

Note: For small, simple graphics, the grab handle resize may work.  Try it out!

Why do I have a red "X" in a document where a picture used to be?

For some reason the picture file is not stored where it was.  It was likely either moved, deleting or renamed.  Do this:

  1. Click on the red "X" representing the missing picture.
  2. Click on the Picture Properties button.
  3. Note in the "Web Location" field the picture file name and path.
  4. Use "explore files (ftp)" and navigate to the path directory where the picture should be.
  5. Find the correct picture file and copy it into this directory.

Click the files pane refresh.  The picture, and any other copies of the picture in the document will now replace the red "X"'s.

IE Cache Considerations

Internet Explorer conveniently saves copies of all pictures you view on the web.  If you come back to a site, IE notices that it has a cached version of the picture and displays that version.  Thus a web site with many pictures will load much faster the second time.  Since the iNetWord editor is a web page, IE also copies all pictures in documents you edit.

So let's suppose you insert a picture into your document and find that it is the wrong size.  So you return to your picture editing program and re-create the picture with the new size.  If you save the new picture with the same filename, then copy it over the same named file in your iNetWord directory, IE will continue showing its cached version rather then your newly copied version.  It doesn't see that the filename has changed, so it uses its copy of the picture -- the old one!

There are two solutions:

  1. Rather than insert a new picture with the same name, give it a slightly different name (ie. mice2.jpg).
  2. Insert the new picture with the same name, then empty the browser's temporary Internet files cache, close all iNetWord documents, and refresh the browser.  Any document containing the modified picture will display the new version correctly.

How do I delete a background?

  1. Click on the background color, pattern, or picture.
  2. Click the Choose Fill Color button arrow.
  3. Do one of:
    1. Click Cell if the background is in a table cell or the entire page background.
    2. Click Table if the background is repeated in all cells of the table..
  4. Click None.

Editor Display:

  • An easy way to be sure that all files display properly is by deleting the browser's temporary Internet cache.  Then close all iNetWord documents and refresh the browser.
  • Click the 'refresh' link at the bottom of the files pane to refresh the files pane display.  This is particularly necessary after adding, deleting, or renaming files using FTP.  Refreshing the files pane also updates the web publish link 'W' for any recently published documents.

The paragraph doesn't look like its style.

  1. Click on the paragraph that doesn't look like its style.
  2. Click the style pull-down.
  3. Select "Clear Formatting: revert selection to its style"

This removes all overrides and resets the style to its original state.

Note:  Styles are applied to an entire paragraph, not a portion of a paragraph.  So to change the style of a paragraph, you only need the cursor placed within the paragraph.

How do I Position Tables?

iNetWord, like other word processing programs, uses text as the positioning element.  Thus when you insert a table, it is inserted on a paragraph line.  That is why you cannot put text and a table on the same text line.  Using the text wrap feature found in the Table Width and Other Properties button allows text alongside the table, even though it's on a different paragraph line.

So that's why we say, a table sits on a paragraph line.  Any changes to the paragraph attributes for that line will also affect the table.  For instance, placing the cursor on the table line just outside the table and then changing the left margin to 0.25" will move the table right 1/4 inches.

In most cases it is best for the table line style to be [No Style].  Since this style has no included styles by default, using this style assures that changes to text document styles will not change the attributes of your table.

Delete a table

The quickest and easiest way to delete a table is to place the cursor just outside the table at the lower-right.  Then press 'Backspace'.  If the table is Left- or Right-Wrap justified, first change it to Left Justified, then try again. (more: Tables)

When sharing a folder with someone, why can't they see pictures I've placed in the shared documents?

To make a document available to others, you must share both the document and any picture folders for those pictures to appear properly for others.  Be sure to save pictures and documents in subfolders, and grant the other person access to both folders.

How can I create a new line of text that is not a new paragraph?

Type Shift-Enter, a shortcut key also standard in other word processors.

Shift Enter is sometimes helpful when making multiple unnumbered listings within one numbered list.

Example, with command key actions shown like this: <Enter>

  1. Paragraph 1 <Enter>
  2. Paragraph 2, 1st line <Shift-Enter>
    Paragraph 2, 2nd line <Shift-Enter>
    Paragraph 2, 3rd line <Enter>
  3. Paragraph 3
